DYMO LetraTag 100H review

The LetraTag 100H is the cheapest proper label maker to start with: small, light, simple enough for a child, and its Plus pack includes both paper and clear plastic tape so you can label folders and jars on day one.

A cheap machine that earns its place

For dry, indoor labels the LetraTag does the job for less than any other keyboard machine here. The listing gives 5 font sizes, 7 print styles and 8 box styles, and the screen shows effects before you print.

The Plus pack is the version to buy because it puts both tape types in your hands: paper for files and shelves, clear plastic for jars and anything that might get wet.

Its alphabetical keyboard is slower for adults than QWERTY and easier for children, which is why it keeps turning up in classrooms and kids' rooms.

Thirty file folders, worked out

Thirty folder labels at 2 inches, plus leader, use about 82 inches of tape, just under 7 feet. That is half of a 13-foot paper LetraTag cassette, about $2 to $4.

Who it suits

  • A first label maker for a student or a child's room.

  • A cheap second machine to keep in a drawer.

Where the LetraTag falls short

Paper labels peel or smudge in damp places
Use the plastic LT tape on jars and in bathrooms or the fridge.
ABC keyboard is slow for long labels
If you type a lot, look at the QWERTY LabelManager 160.
Battery drain
It switches itself off, but take batteries out if it will sit unused for months.

Paper or plastic tape?

Buy the 100H Plus pack. Add a two-pack of plastic LT tape if you plan to label the kitchen.

Supplies that fit

In the box

  • The LetraTag 100H
  • One LT paper cassette (black on white) and one LT plastic cassette (black on clear)
  • A magnetic holder, per the Plus pack listing
  • Batteries are not included

Your first label, step by step

  1. Fit the batteries and the LT cassette.
  2. Type on the ABC keyboard and check the graphical display.
  3. Choose a font size and box style if you like. Print, then use the cutter.

Good fit, poor fit

Good fit if you want a cheap, simple label maker for jars and folders, or a kid's school things.

Poor fit if labels need to survive water or sun. Laminated TZe tape holds up better.

DYMO LetraTag 100H or Nelko P21 Bluetooth Label Maker?

The Nelko P21 prints cheaper labels, designs them on a phone and does icons and QR codes. The LetraTag wins if you want buttons instead of an app, or if a child will use it alone.

Our take on the LetraTag 100H

If you want a cheap, simple label maker for folders and toy boxes as well as dry pantry shelves, order the LetraTag 100H Plus and use the plastic tape where things get wet.
